Banker quits Barclays bank to sell pencils in the streets and makes more money (video)

Wearing big suit and tie everyday when the salary you earn does not march up is sometimes more traumatic than being completely jobless. In fact, when you see bankers dressed sharply and driving luxury cars, please be slow in envying them.Banker quits Barclays bank to sell pencils in the streets and makes more money (video)
Banker quits Barclays bank to sell pencils in the streets and makes more money (video) A Kenyan banker, Edgar Otieno was compelled to quit his job at Barclays bank in the East African country to sell pencils in the streets, which he claims he earns more money from than what he used to receive monthly as salary at the bank.  The 42-year-old man told Tuko.co.ke that, before he even became a banker, he had been hawking pencils in the streets right from age 25. He would take the pencils in bulk from a certain company and sell on commission basis.   “I was so good at it, that I was named best agent multiple times. When the company folded in 2005, I decided to continue with the job,” he told the news portal.
Edgar is always seen in the streets, sometimes by his colleague bankers and managers, wearing his neatly pressed suit and tie as though he was still a banker, but he is actually selling pencils.
“Some people wonder why I show up every morning sharply dressed yet my work involves chasing after customers and convincing them to buy pencils; in sales, people buy you first before they buy whatever you are selling,” he revealed.
The determined man said that the money he was being paid at the Barclays bank was woefully inadequate for him, hence the decision to quit and make time for what he loves doing best.
Some of his former colleague bankers confirmed that he was indeed a banker, but chose to switch to strict hawking which he enjoys doing unapologetically.
"We worked with him at Barclays Bank, but he quit and went back to hawking. He makes good money," Jymoh Msema Kweli wrote when photos of Edgar emerge online.
Another one, Bancy Roba said: "I love his heart. One of us poached him for insurance, but he didn't go for long. He preferred hawking.”
Watch Edgar Otieno in the video below as he narrates his awe-inspiring story:

21 THINGS YOU NEEDS TO KNOW BEFORE SETTING UP A BUSINESS 📌📌

The facts are that three quarters of startups fail within the first three years, and a third of those fall by the wayside in the first six months. To give you the best chance of surviving this teething period we've compiled the top 21 things to research before you take the plunge.

1. Sole trader or limited company?
Which you choose will impact on the tax you pay and how much legal and financial responsibility is laid at your door. As a sole trader you take all the post-tax profits but you are also liable for all of your business' financial dealings. For a guide on the pros and cons of each,

2. Size up the competition
Who else is doing what you're planning to do? How well do they do it? By studying the competition you can learn from others' mistakes - or even what their customers appreciate. Learn how much people are willing to pay for your product or service and how you could enhance the current offerings.

If one big player dominates the market space, focus on what they don't do well or who they don't cater for, provide a superior service and you could grab a share of their space. Alternatively, if the market is fragmented, there could be an opportunity to launch a brand that becomes the de facto choice for consumers.

3.Define your target audience
Appealing to everyone appeals to no one. You need to focus on your target audience and style everything, from your website to your marketing campaigns, around them. Make sure you are targeting the right people by sending out questionnaires, speaking to your customers through social media and holding focus groups. The only way to provide a product or service people really want is to get inside their heads. Involve your target customer in the development of your business and continue to test, test, test. Consulting your customers will also make them feel like they have a voice, will breed loyalty and, if you're lucky, will increase the likelihood of them recommending you to others.

4. Paying yourself
How will you pay yourself? You need to think about this up front. With the best intentions of ploughing profits straight back into the business, you're going to have to eat, drink and put a roof over your head. Cut back on the luxuries, but figure out what you do need to live on and include it in your outgoings. The bank or any investors would much rather see this than you going back cap-in-hand six months after you told them your business plan made sense.

5. Your business name
Think long and hard about your name: you're going to be stuck with it as rebrands are expensive and painful. It'll need to work with an available web domain and will also often be the first thing prospective customers see. Consider what your name needs to say about your business. Should it simply be a case of 'says what it does on the tin' or communicate aspects of your brand identity, such as Innocent Drinks, or perhaps geography is important if you're focused on serving or representing a local area - Manchester Landscaping Ltd or Premium Lincolnshire Sausages Ltd, for instance.

6. How you'll get your name out there
No point having an amazing business idea if nobody knows about it - so how will you get your name out there? Without a big marketing budget, start small and focus on building relationships. Use social media and network hard to start building a reputation with not just potential customers, but also local journalists, suppliers, fellow retailers, local business organisations. Start a blog, be active on Facebook and Twitter, offer to write articles or talk for free on your expert subject, get people trying and reviewing your product or service, think about having a launch party. For tonnes more low cost marketing tips click here.

7. Your web presence
Did you know that 50% of small business don't have a website? Most want one, but they either think they can't afford one or don't have the skills to put it together themselves. The latter may have been true a few years ago, but web building tools such as Moonfruit - available as part of Smarta Business Builder - mean absolute beginners can now get a fully e-commerce website up and running in no time. You might not need to sell online though, perhaps a simple brochure site showcasing what you do would be enough - but, then again, wouldn't it be nice to take bookings? Start thinking about how much more business you could be doing by embracing an online market - then explore the available options to make it happen.

8. Your USP
Customers will only stop buying from other businesses in favour of yours if you offer something better or different. Your USP (unique sales proposition) defines what is special about your offering; what customers can't get elsewhere.

Carefully sculpt your USP: perhaps it's your product if it is genuinely unique, or maybe it's about customer experience, after-sales support, the way you price or offer payment, or perhaps everything you do is organic. Maybe - like Tom's Shoes, which donates footwear to Africa for every sale made - you appeal to consumers' growing demand for ethical trading. Find your angle then make sure everything you do is true to it.

9. Funding
In an ideal world you would have enough money to self-fund the launch of your new business. But, for the majority, that's not an option. Instead you can ask friends or family if they may be willing to help or you can look into getting a bank loan or seek out an investor. You should also look into what business grants are available: they're hard to come by but brilliant if you manage to get one. If you can't secure the funding you need to launch your master plan, start small and prove the business works - then go back to the bank or investors with more evidence.

10. Find an accountant
An accountant is much more than just a bean-counter. They should be a valuable and trusted source of financial and business advice. Usually armed with many years' experience they can help you steer the company away from danger and advise you when and where to save your money. Seek a local accountant with experience in your sector who'll see you as a big enough client not to just pass you onto a junior. Ensure you can afford to pay for help like this by not frittering away money getting them to sort out your shoebox of bills and invoices.

11. Write a business plan
Business plans rock - really! Don't view them as a chore you must do for the bank or an investor - use this as a chance to prove to yourself that every aspect of your business plan and model works and makes sense. If it doesn't, do you really want to go ahead? The LivePlan software in the Smarta Business Builder takes you step-by-step through every process of putting together a business plan, from the executive summary to the cash forecasting.

12. Route to market
This one's really simple - how will you sell to your customers? What's your route to market? Consider all your options, from market stalls to an eBay shop or mail order, to a retail unit or concession, to picking up businesses at networking events and on social media, to telesales or integrated partnerships or simply via Google Adwords. Where will your business come from? Where's the obvious place to start? You can't possibly write a business plan until you've worked out your platforms and route to market, and how much each will cost you.

13. Potential partners
Who could you benefit from working with? Forming a relationship with a business in another sector could help you tap into a whole new customer base. For example, if you're a florists you could find a wedding planner and supply flowers for them at a discounted price. You'll get access to their customers and you can recommend people to them. It's beneficial for both parties. Find someone to share half the workload and you'll move twice as fast.

14. Licensing and legal issues
When launching a business you should speak to the local authority to find out whether you need any special licenses to sell in your area. For example, if you are selling alcohol or food you need a license. If you fail to produce one, you'll be fined and could ultimately be closed down. There are a host of other legal obligations to consider and it's best to get at least one session of legal advice. You should also ensure processes - from sales to supplier agreements and terms and conditions - are legal binding and contracted up. Smarta Business Builder provides access to a library of legal contracts written by award winning solicitors that can personalised to your business.

15. Find the best business bank account
You'll need a business bank account, but don't just go straight to the bank you've used as a consumer. Find one that understands your business and who you feel comfortable with. Most banks also offer incentives for new sign-ups.

16. Staffing requirements
Will you need employees from day one? If not, how about day 100? You need a plan for this so you're organised, prepared and resourced for whenever - if ever - that day is. Employing someone is a big commitment to the individual, but also to your bottom line. Don't jump into it and be clear before making any appointment exactly what that person will do and what added revenue they will bring to the business: it's usually an equation that results in a quick rethink! If you can, utilise freelancers and look what you can outsource.

17. Insurance
You are required by law to have employers' liability insurance if you have any staff and public liability insurance if you expect to welcome customers or suppliers onto your premises. You must also insure any vehicle you use. If you sell products explore if you need product liability insurance.

It can be expensive, but think if your business could survive should the unthinkable happen and your premises, equipment or stock was stolen or damaged.

Shop around for the best deal and ask your bank for any deals that may come as part of your account. Premiums are increasingly annually, so research ways you can keep quotes low.

18. Skill gaps, experience and training
Just because you've eaten in a lot of restaurants it doesn't mean you'd know how to run one - a fairly obvious statement numerous wannabe restaurateurs have ignored to their peril. So even though you may have a killer business idea you need to work out if you have the experience and skills to execute it. If you haven't, look into training, evening classes and even think about getting a job in the industry first to pick up that valuable insider knowledge.

19. Technology
Audit your business plan to figure out what technology will enable you do five things: save time, save money, stay in control, make more sales and deliver a better service to your customers.

There are a host of apps and some brilliant mobile technology out there to consider - and Smarta Business Builder is designed at helping you with the first three in order to let you focus on the other two.

Create a business plan, build a website, manage your accounts, access legal documents and your email all in one place - keeping you super organised and in control.

Use the spare time to get closer to your customers on social media.

20. Mentors
There's nothing better than having an experienced business mentor to turn to for guidance, or simply to bounce ideas off. Someone who has been there and done it, and knows what you're going through will be invaluable. Is there a business guru in your circle of friends? If not target people you admire, seek recommendations from people within your industry or consider government-backed mentoring schemes. The Prince's Trust can put you in touch with a business mentor if you are aged 14-30.

21. When to start (and give up your day job)
You're ready to launch your business, but don't rush to quit the day job - the salary could be useful in the short-term. It could pay to start piecing together your business out-of-office hours, and then make the leap once your business can sustain you, and is truly ready for your full-time attention.

MUST READ!! SEE THE EASIEST WAY TO MAKE COOL CASH DURING THE UPCOMING ELECTION IN NIGERIA

A lot of things have been happening in all states across Nigeria recently and people are really determined to vote out a party and replace with another simply because the Nigerian economy hasn’t been financially stable.

However, there are some people who still find it very easy to buy things and cater for their selves in this period of recession. Some are even spending money lavishly to buy material things that might not last depending on how they use.
Today, I will be sharing with you some ways you can make money in Nigeria during election just to be able to sustain yourself till the winning President is inaugurated. I have made a lot of money for myself and family before and during elections over they years and I still do it and now I will sharing with you my personal secret to make money during election.
See ways to make money this February below:

1. Sell Meat Pie:

This may sound funny but I want you to give it a second thought. There will be over 300 people queuing waiting to be the next in line to vote as early as 6am till evening. The biggest investment you could make is to make and sell meat pies to people around that polling unit. It is advisable to sell at a place closer to your home so you can escape once there’s any trace of violence or gun shootings.

2. Sell Pure Water and Drinks

I bet you wouldn’t want to argue with me about this. People will definitely buy drinks. I am very sure of that. You could start with 5 bags of pure water and buy drinks like Coke, Fanta, Bigi Cola, Coca Cola and Pepsi. These are peoples favourite and I am very sure, if you can do this. You’ll make a lot of money for that day.

3. Sell Fish Rolls and Doughnut

Actually, I am listing this because my mom bakes and I will tell her to do this. Is she is scared of selling at a polling unit. I would help her to sell. This is another golden investment you can decide to join on Election Day. So start making preparations from now.

4. Sell Face Caps

This is not funny at all because people especially guys are really going to buy face caps when there’s sun. Just pray there’s a very hot sun that day.
NOTE: You should go out once you start seeing traces that it is sunny. I would not expect you to go to the polling unit at 7AM in the morning. People will even be laughing at you because it is not sunny yet.

5. Sell Handkerchiefs

People who can’t afford to buy face caps would definitely be able to purchase handkerchiefs when it is beginning to get sunny. Your target audience here should be mostly females. It get sweaty too when there’s heat, so you should visit the polling unit only when there is hot sun.

6. Sell Indomie and egg

This is indeed very good. People prefer to eat good food to junks like biscuit and egg roll. I’ll advise those that have been doing it before to try this. If you’re looking for a very fast way to make money on Election Day, I won’t suggest you venture into this business because people can’t be predicted and of course people would love to eat good food.

7. Sell Earpiece

This is indeed a very good idea! A guy came in to the library when I was writing this article. He was listening to music and this brought about the idea of selling hear piece. A lot of people will be there chatting with their phones while the place is rowdy and everybody shouting and talking at their loudest voice. A lot of people will really be interested in buying an earpiece to listen to songs. So selling earpiece during election period is a good fetch.
Another thing is Make sure you package yourself very well so as not to look the same as those that are not up to you.
That will increase your customers more

CHECK OUT ;;36 WAYS TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE WITHOUT SCAMMING

32 Legitimate Ways to Make Money at Home
Honest Abe

So you need a way to make money from home. Hey, join the crowd. Nearly 4 million Americans are working from home these days. That’s more than the population of Oregon, Utah or Iowa.
In other words, there’s an invisible army of us clocking in and sitting down at our keyboards at home. A 2015 Gallup pollfound that 37% of Americans have telecommuted in their careers — four times as many as in 1995.

Problem is, we all know the internet is chock full of work-from-home scams. So many ripoffs! Seriously, it’s like the Wild West out there, except there’s no Lone Ranger to put things right.
When you’re working from home, you’re truly on your own. You’ve got to look out for yourself, ’cause no one else will.

How to Make Money From Home

With that in mind, we’re trying to do you a solid.
We’ve scoured through thousands of different ideas to find you 32 unique ways to make money from home. I guarantee there are some in here you’ve never heard of.

The important thing is: These methods are all road-tested. These are all ideas we’ve tried before, so we know they’re real and that you’ll really get paid.
Here are 32 legitimate ways to make money from home:
  1. 1. Get $5 From Stash to Start Saving

It’s no brilliant secret that investing can be a smart way to make money.
Sometimes, though, it feels restricted to a few wealthy elite.
But Stash is different. This app lets you start investing with as little as $5 and for just a $1 monthly fee for balances under $5,000. (The first month is free.)
Stash curates investments from professional fund managers and investors and lets you choose where to put your money.
But it leaves the complicated investment terms out of it. You just choose from a set of simple portfolios reflecting your beliefs, interests and goals.
Bonus: Right now, The Penny Hoarder is teaming up with Stash to fund your first investment — so you’ll get an extra $5 bonus to get started.
  2. 2. Collect Points For Gift Cards Through Drop

    Pssstt… we’ve got a secret.
There’s a new rewards platform on the market. Drop is a financial-tech company that automatically rewards you for your purchases.
As an exclusive Drop user, all you have to do is link your credit and debit cards. When you make a Drop-qualified purchase, you’ll automatically earn points, whether you’re grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s, hailing an Uber or ordering a pizza
The points will add up, and you can then exchange them for gift cards to popular retailers like Amazon and Starbucks. It’s the ultimate loyalty card — without the card.
  3. 3. Stop Deleting Your Emails

It turns out that deleting your emails could be costing you serious money. Intrigued?
Our new secret weapon is called Paribus — a tool that gets you money back for your online purchases. It’s free to sign up. Once you do, it will scan your email archives for any receipts. If it discovers you’ve purchased something from Target or one of the other retailers listed on its website, it will track the item’s price. Once a price drop is detected, Paribus engages with the retailer on your behalf, requesting a refund – automatically!
You don’t have to do anything!
If something shows up late, Paribus will help you get money back for what you paid for shipping — up to a full shipping refund.
  4. 4. Earn Money for Shopping on Amazon

    AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin
If you’re a regular Amazon shopper, you can earn money each month contributing to research to help companies understand what people are buying online.
Companies use this information to improve the online shopping experience.
Before you download an app calledShopTracker by Harris Poll, let us give you the basic requirements:
    • This will be a waste of time if you don’t shop on Amazon.
    • You must be 18 and live in the U.S.
    • You’ll need at least a Windows 7-compatible PC. If you have Windows XP or a Mac, it won’t work.
    All good? Time to download.
Once you connect your Amazon account, you’ll receive your Visa e-gift card code for $3 via email within 48 hours — and another $3 every month you continue to share your purchase history.
  5. 5. Give Your Opinion to Make $730 This Year

Surveys aren’t the quickest way to make money, but they’re a great way to cash in on your down time. Fill them out while you’re watching TV, riding the bus or waiting in line.
One survey site we love is calledInboxDollars. It offers several short, daily surveys you can take. If you take all of them each day, you could earn an extra $730 a year — not too bad.
  6. 6. Earn Up to $60/Hour as a Part-Time Bookkeeper

Does earning $60 an hour sound appealing? How about the freedom to work from home while helping others succeed?
Those are the perks of working as a bookkeeper, says Ben Robinson, a certified public accountant and business owner who teaches others to become virtual bookkeepers.
And no, you don’t have to have a CPA to be successful in this business. In fact, all you really need are decent computer skills and a passion for helping business owners tackle real-world problems.
It’s a great opportunity for moms who want to work part time, millennials who are just out of college and anyone who wants to bring in real money while working from home.
We talked to Robinson about what it takes to become a virtual bookkeeper, as well as tips and advice for making this career track work for you. You can read the full interview here, or check out his website for more information.
  7. 7. Earn Rewards for Shopping with Coupons

    GeorgeRudy/Getty Images
Have you heard of MyPoints? It’s a cash-back site that lets you earn rewards by shopping online and printing coupons.
We love it around here, because it’s an instant way to save on everything you buy. For example, you can get up to 5% cash back on purchases in some categories on Amazon (i.e. where we shop foreverything).
Plus, you can get a bonus $10 Amazon gift card when you sign up. Here’s how:
    1. Sign up for MyPoints for free here using your email address or Facebook account.
    2. Use the MyPoints portal next time you need to shop online. It’s connected to thousands of stores including faves like Walmart, Amazon and Target.
    3. When you spend $10 at any of those stores, MyPoints will reward you with 1,750 bonus points, which you can redeem for a free $10 gift card of your choice.
  8. 8. Invest in Real Estate (You Don’t Have to Be Rich)

    SolisImages/Getty Images
Want to try real-estate investing without playing landlord? We found a company that helps you do just that.
Oh, and you don’t have to have hundreds of thousands of dollars, either. You can get started with a minimum investment of just $500. A company called Fundrise does all the heavy lifting for you.
Through the Fundrise Starter Portfolio, your money will be split into two portfolios that support private real estate around the United States.
This isn’t an obscure investment, though. You can see exactly which properties are included in your portfolios — like a set of townhomes in Snoqualmie, Washington, or an apartment building in Charlotte, North Carolina.
You can earn money through quarterly dividend payments and potential appreciation in the value of your shares, just like a stock. Cash flow typically comes from interest payments and property income (e.g. rent).
(But remember: Investments come with risk. While Fundrise has paid distributions every quarter since at least Q2 2016, dividend and principal payments are never guaranteed.)
You’ll pay a 0.85% annual asset management fee and a 0.15% annual investment advisory fee.
  9. 9. Download These Apps

Don’t forget apps when you’re consideringonline money-making opportunities. A number of companies will actually pay you for downloading apps on your smartphone — and you’ll get paid for every month you keep them installed. The apps collect data and help companies better understand web and mobile usage — such as what times of day people browse, how long they stay on websites and use apps, and what types of sites and apps are popular (or not).
    • QuickThoughts Missions relies on your input — and sneakily-taken cellphone photography — to give businesses important feedback. And like any respectable PI, you get paid for your investigative footwork.
    • MobileXpression for Android: After you’ve installed this app for one week, you get to play an instant rewards game for a prize. (Everyone wins something.) We won a $25 Amazon gift card, but some of the other prizes include iPads and Samsung TVs.
    • MobileXpression iPhone: This is the same as above, but for iOS.
    • SavvyConnect — You can earn $5 per device (phone, tablet or computer) for each month SavvyConnect is installed. That’s a total of up to $180 per year for letting this app collect data that helps companies better understand web and mobile usage. Some of the things that they’re interested in learning: what times of day people browse, how long they stay on websites and use apps, and what types of sites and apps are popular (or not).

  11. 11. Let Someone Borrow Your Place for the Night

Have a spare room? Might as well use Airbnb to make some money by renting it out.
If you’re a good host with a desirable space, you could add hundreds — even thousands — of dollars to your savings account with Airbnb.
Taking a few simple steps can make the difference between a great experience and a less-than-satisfactory one.
    Here are a few tips:
Make your space available during high-demand times in your area. Think: concerts, conventions and sporting events.
Be a good host and make sure your place is stocked with the toiletries you’d expect at a hotel — toilet paper, soap and towels.
Be personable. A lot of travelers turn to Airbnb for the personal touch they won’t find at commercial properties.
(Hosting laws vary from city to city. Please understand the rules and regulations applicable to your city and listing.)

  13. 13. Sell Your Old Clothes

    Guess/Facebook
Do you still have a prom outfit from, like, 10 years ago?
It’s never going to fit — or come into style — again, but something just keeps holding you back from sending it to Goodwill.
Maybe money could change your mind. Instead of storing clothes indefinitely, try selling them.
One app we especially like is letgo. You can literally list your clothes in less than a minute.
  14. 14. Scan Your Groceries When You Get Home

Did you know the Nielsen company willpay you to scan your groceries each week? Crazy, right?
Once you sign up to become a Nielsen Consumer Panel family, you’ll be asked to simply scan the barcodes on your groceries and send your data off to Nielsen each week. Pretty easy, huh?
  15. 15. Make a Bet to Lose Some Weight

    vgajic/Getty Images
So this is the part where you scratch your head and say, “No way.”
HealthyWage is a program that allows you to place a bet on your weight-loss goals. The idea is that if nothing else, maybe, just maybe, a cash prize will motivate you.
    It’s worked for many others.
Take, for example, Angie Richards, who bet herself she’d lose 40 pounds in six months. She ended up losing 52 pounds and winning $1,200.
Then there’s Katelyn Pincock and her husband, Cort, who each bet $75 per month for six months. They ended up winning $3,000.
Unfortunately, the program doesn’t come with a magical diet or sweatless workout regimen. But hopefully the potential to win some cash will help you keep your eyes on the prize.
  16. 16. Earn Cash Back on Your Grocery Run

Ibotta is an easy-to-use cash-back app that’s partnered with more than 50 retailers, just about anywhere you’d do any kind of shopping.
Before heading to the store, search for items on your shopping list within the app. Strawberries? Check. An ear of corn? Check. Add each cash-back opportunity to your list in the app.
    Then shop.
When you get home, snap a photo of your receipt and scan the items’ barcodes.
    Bam. Cash back.
Some cash-back opportunities we’ve seen include:
    • 25 cents back for any item
    • 25 cents back on strawberries
    • 50 cents back on frozen fruit snacks
    • $1 back on a box of tea
    • $5 back on a case of Shiner Bock beer
Notice a lot of those aren’t tied to a brand — just shop for the staples on your list, and earn cash back!
Ibotta is free to download. Plus, you’ll get a $10 sign-up bonus after uploading your first receipt.
  17. 17. Earn $250 By Opening a Second Bank Account

    hidesy/Shutterstock
We’ve put together a huge list of banks that will pay you just to open an account! Some of them will pay you up to $250 just for opening a savings account!
There’s no harm in having multiple bank accounts. In fact, I often find it’s helpful to have multiple places to save (I’m less likely to touch the money), so I have savings accounts for my Christmas fund and my vacation fund
The top bank bonus is $250 right now — head over to this list to see all of the banks in your area that are offering free cash.
  18. 18. Start Kickin’

    piola666/Getty Images
No extreme physical activity or pulled muscles required for this money-making trick. All you need to do is download the Shopkick app.
Once you sign up, the app pays you in “kicks” for walking into certain stores (including Walmart, Target, TJMaxx and more). These can be redeemed for gift cards to a number of retailers, including Amazon, Target, Walmart, Starbucks, Sephora and Best Buy.
It pays you even more “kicks” for photos of receipts that include qualifying items you purchased in-store with a connected credit or debit card. You can also earn kicks for online purchases. Bonus: You don’t have to do anything; your linked cards will automatically apply your kicks.
We’ve got an ultimate guide to using the app here.
  19. 19. Drive Folks Around Town

PHILADELPHIA, PA – JAN 13, 2017: Lyft driver Paul Pruce in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 13, 2017. (Jessica Kourkounis)
Need a fun, flexible way to earn money while also meeting lots of new people?
Demand for ride-sharing has been growing like crazy, and it shows no signs of slowing down. To be eligible, you’ll need to be at least 21 years old with a year of driving experience, pass a background check and own a car made in 2007 or later.
We talked to Paul Pruce, who’s been driving full-time with Lyft for over a year. He earns $750 a week as a driver.
Best of all, he does it on his own time. You can work days, nights or weekends — it’s up to you!
Because it’s simple to switch between apps, many Lyft drivers also sign up as a driver partner with Uber.
As a driver partner with Uber, you are an independent contractor. You create your own schedule and work as much or as little as you want.
If you want to give it a try, here are a few of the things to keep in mind: You must be at least 21 years old, have at least one year of licensed driving experience in the U.S. (three years if you are under 23 years old), have a valid US driver’s license and pass a background check.
Also, your car must be a four-door, seat at least four passengers (excluding the driver), be registered in-state and be covered by in-state insurance.
  20. 20. Get a $10 Gift Card to Walmart

    Samantha Dunscombe/The Penny Hoarder
Believe it or not, some sites will give you free gift cards just for signing up with them.
One of our favorites is Ebates, a cash back shopping site. It’s giving away $10 gift cards if you sign up as a new member and earn your first cash-back rebate.
You can choose a $10 gift card for Walmart or $10 in Ebates cash for your next shopping trip on the site.
    To earn your gift card:
    1. Sign up for Ebates here with your email or Facebook account.
    2. Make your first purchase through the site within 90 days, and spend at least $25.
    3. Your account will be credited with rewards points you cash in for your $10 gift card.
  21. 21. Earn up to $700/Month Fixing Search Results

You could make about $700 this month for evaluating search-engine results.
And the best part? Most of it can done while working from home — in pajamas.Let us explain…
Search engines use complicated algorithms to determine the results you see. For example, if you type the name of one of our writers, Steve Gillman, into a Google search box, a half-million possibly-relevant web pages will be narrowed down using various criteria until a second later, you see his smiling face.
You’ll also see links to his personal website, his blog on the Huffington Post and LinkedIn profiles for a bunch of guys who share his name.
But the search engines don’t always get it right.
They are full of errors, so they need real humans to look at the results and judge them for quality, relevance and usefulness. If you’re interested in this type of work, head over to our search-engine-evaluator article to get more info on how to apply.
  22. 22. Rent out Your RV

    darrensp/Getty Images
How many people do you know who bought an RV for one awesome camping trip or music festival… only to look back a few years later and realize they don’t use it as much as they thought they would?
If you’re in that boat (er, camper), you can turn your unused RV into cash.
You can rent your RV to other travelers through RVshare, a peer-to-peer rental marketplace.
How much you’ll earn per day will vary based on your location and the type of vehicle you have. We ran a quick hypothetical and found that Class A models made in the past 15 years range $185 to $375 a night here in St. Petersburg, Florida!
That’s a smart way to make your pricy RV pay for itself — or to bank some cash for your next big road trip.
To see how much you could earn renting out your RV, enter the specs here.
  23. 23. Hang Out at Bars

    mihailomilovanovic/Getty Images
Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name. And pays you. To drink beer.
Sound too good to be true?
Secret Hopper is a relatively new company that invites beer lovers to secret shop at breweries and rate their experience. Were you greeted when you came in? Did they offer a sampler? Did the bartender engage you in conversation?
There’s a rather extensive questionnaire you fill out after visiting the brewery, so it helps to review it beforehand. The Penny Hoarder’s own Tyler Omoth tried it out for himself. Read more about his experience here.
To signing up, just go to the web page and fill out the simple form with your age, gender and general beer knowledge.
There are plenty of other types of mystery shops, as well. Choose what fits your schedule so you can pick up retail shopping and restaurants, too, if you want to round out your day.
  24. 24. Sell Your Trash

Americans throw away approximately 266 million tons of trash every year, and it turns out we might as well be throwing away cash.
There’s a reason dumpster diving has become so popular in recent years, and it’s because things you think are worth nothing often do have value.
Anything from your empty wine bottles to old magazines can be sold online. Here’s a full list of the things in your trash that might be worth cash.
  25. 25. Sell Your Skills for $5 on Fiverr

Earning $5 at a time might not sound like much, but those little sales can add up to thousands of dollars.
That’s the idea behind Fiverr.com, an online platform where users sell their products and services for $5 each. Fiverr says users create 5,600 new listings, or “gigs,” every day.
Gigs range from the standard data entry and research tasks to the truly out-there. For example, at the time this was written, sellers in the Fun and Lifestyle section were offering:
A piece of rare metal that will melt in your hand
A prank phone call to anyone you choose
Three balloons released into the sky with your message in them
Your name written on two grains of rice
A photo of you on the cover of “Rolling Stone”
A video of a woman pretending to be “crazy in love with you” — which has 253 buyers and a 98% positive rating so far
You can seriously sell almost anything on Fiverr. Here are some more ideas.
  26. 26. Make Your Own Schedule as a Data-Entry Clerk

    mixetto/Getty Images
Data entry isn’t the best-paying online job, but it is one you can do with few skills or previous experience.
Typically, all you need is a computer and internet connection. Fire up a pot of coffee and find online data-entry jobs through these freelancing sites:

  • 27. Become an Online Tutor

    Carmen Mandato/ The Penny Hoarder
Education is one of the world’s leading industries, and the private tutoring market alone is expected to top $102 billion by this year.
Have you ever considered becoming an online tutor to make extra money at home?  Well, if you haven’t, you most certainly should.  You can make some serious coin by answering students’ questions, explaining your notes and uploading tutorials.
That’s right — by sharing your knowledge, you can be rewarded handsomely.
Try marketing your services on a site likeTutor.com, where instructors earn $9 to $13 per hour, plus $5.50 per hour just for being logged in waiting for students.
  • 28. Become a Dog Masseuse

We’ve talked before about ways to get paid to spend time with cats and dogs, but this is a new one: pet massage.
That’s right — some people earn money for massaging animals. It might sound a little strange, but apparently many cats and dogs enjoy a good massage as much as humans do.
If you like petting your furry friends, why not explore this option? With a bit of training, you can make $50 per hour as a pet massage therapistHere’s how to get started.
  • 29. Sell Board Game Pieces

    Diane Macdonald/Getty Images
Ever seen a board game in the thrift store but noticed with great sadness it was missing half the pieces?
You might want to put the game in your shopping cart anyway. One Penny Hoarder made $250 in six months selling spare board game pieces online. You can even sell “mystery bags” of pieces for $12 a pop!
It might take some time for your listings to sell, but if you follow Laura’s guide, you can probably make $100 in about three months.
  • 30. Write Slogans for Major Companies

    voice acting
Can you sum up a product in a sentence? Think of something funny — and not another joke about too many candles — to put on a birthday card? Make a point in few concise words?
If so, you might be able to make money writing slogans.
Companies sometimes need new corporate taglines, advertising slogans and jingles. Bumper sticker and greeting card makers want cute, endearing or funny thoughts to put on their products.
When these businesses need help, they sometimes collect submissions from freelance writers or run contests anyone can enter — including you.
Try one or more of these platforms to get started:
Slogan Slingers helps companies create slogan contests, in which their registered writers compete. It’s free to sign up as a writer, and the company claims you can make up to $999 per contest (minus its small admin fee).
Get a Slogan is a crowdsourcing platform that brings in custom, creative and catchy slogans from a variety of sloganeers. Companies come to them for help, and writers submit their ideas. It’s free to sign up, but you initially have only “qualifying” status. Once you’re upgraded to “qualified,” you’ll receive $50 for each of your winning slogans.
Freelancer.com has a section devoted to slogan-writing projects, which are sometimes run as contests. For example, at the moment, a personal-injury law firm is offering $150 for the best “unique and memorable tagline/slogan.”
  • 31. Watch More Television

    Watching Netflix
Do you like to stay up-to-date on the latest popular — and not-so-popular — TV shows? Get paid for the TV you’re watching in your spare time by writing reviews.
    Writing about&
;TV comes in a lot of forms, according to NPR television reporter Linda Holmes. Lots of sites pay writers to review or recap shows, but different types of write-ups require different tones.
You could do a straightforward review of the craft of the show, search for symbolism in the story or start a conversation with readers about the lives of the characters.
If you prefer a bit of snark, you might write for a site that prefers to riff on TV shows. These turn your review into an opportunity for biting punchlines.
A few places to get you started:

  • 32. Get $5 to Invest With Acorns

A person gets their monthly budget in order.
    Carmen Mandato/ The Penny Hoarder
Acorns is a simple savings and investment app that rounds your credit or debit card purchases up to the nearest dollar and invests the digital change.
You can connect the app to your credit or debit card and let it automatically round up all your transactions, or manually round up only the ones you choose.
Contributor CJ Reid does the latter, accepting roundups of less than $0.50, such as his $3.60 cup of coffee.
“Rounding up 40 cents here and 25 cents there moves me swiftly enough to $5 so that I can begin investing without putting myself into the red,” she says.
Once your round ups reach $5, that amount will be transferred from your bank to your Acorns account, and invested into your chosen portfolio.
“Acorns makes it easy to invest by removing the responsibility of choosing individual investments or worrying about trades,” Reid explains. “You don’t need any previous investment knowledge or history.”
And once you get the process automated, Acorns investments make your digital change work for you.
“With a conservative portfolio,” Reid says, “I turned $15 into $19 within a few weeks.”
